HAY & CORNSTALK GRINDING

Grinding hay is one of the most efficient ways to feed hay or other forages to ruminant animals today.  The service we provide allows farmers to conserve hay by feeding a pre-determined amount of hay to their livestock daily.

Another benefit is the elimination of waste and sorting from feeding round bales in rings.  Grinding also allows farmers to mix multiple types of hay, or other materials such as cornstalks into a pile of ground feed to stretch their hay supply.  This also provides the farmer with the opportunity to feed poorer quality roughage to livestock and supplement their rations with other feed sources for the nutritional value needed in a feed wagon or other method.  The practice of feeding ethanol by-products with all types of ground forage into tires or feed bunks daily, eliminates self-feeding which promotes sorting and waste loss.

Cornstalks are an excellent source of lower-quality feed.  Most farmers are taking advantage of the less expensive feed and grinding cornstalk bales.  The ground material is commonly mixed with ethanol by-products for feed.

Grinding cornstalk bales also provides an excellent material for bedding for livestock and can be used as composting material.

FAQ

WHAT WILL GRINDING HAY DO FOR ME?

For livestock farmers, grinding hay allows you to have many options for feeding all types of forage. Grinding hay is a great way to mix different types of hay or cornstalk bales into a pile of feed to stretch your hay supply. It also gives you the control of feeding your herd a pre-determined amount of feed, instead of self-feeding with bale rings. Grinding hay is the simplest way to eliminate waste while providing a uniform product for mixing with by-products for additional nutrition sources.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM GRINDING HAY?

Grinding hay is infinitely variable for each producer, depending on their feeding program and their livestock's nutritional requirements.  It is common for farmers to grind enough feed for about a month through the winter season, although we work wtith every farmer to determine their needs and what grinding program best fits each farm operation.

HOW WILL I FEED GROUND HAY?

There are many ways to feed ground hay. Some of our customers feed ground hay in a feeder trailer that is pulled out into a field or lot once full.  This is a simple way to feed ground hay without having to purchase a feed mixer wagon if you're only feeding a herd of cows in the winter season.

Another very common way to feed ground hay is by using inverted tires.  This method is a great way to feed cows with a silage box wagon or a feed mixer wagon.  Many farmers move their tires periodically to distribute the manure throughout their field.

We also have producers simply feeding hay by the loader bucket full as they grind close to a feedlot where they winter their cows and fill the fence-line bunks every morning.

These are a few methods of feeding ground hay, of which there are many possibilities.  Don't hesitate to ask us for other options or ideas that our customers may be using currently!
